Why are probes important?
Probes connect the signal source to be measured both physically and electrically to the oscilloscope. Different probes have sometimes very different influence on the voltages to be measured. The demands on probes with regard to signal acquisition, connection quality, linearity or even signal attenuation are therefore very high, since otherwise the measurement result obtained is negatively influenced.
In principle, a distinction is made between passive and active probes:
- Passive: No separate power supply necessary, is operated with oscilloscope.
These probes are relatively inexpensive, but have more influence on the measured voltages.
- Active: Need their own power source
These are much more expensive, but hardly influence the signals with excellent bandwidth
